Program Description:
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this conference is to provide education to participants on the management of older adults with geriatric conditions.  Frontline primary care providers and staff, particularly those in rural areas, often lack access to geriatric consultation and opportunities to learn about care for older adults; older Veterans may benefit from increased knowledge and skills in their primary care teams on how to address health problems in older adults including geriatric syndromes and conditions.

Given the public health crisis that opioid and heroin abuse that has ravished the country, clinicians have to balance the need to manage pain while also examining the potential for abuse or diversion. This presentation will therefore examine the epidemic as well as methods providers can use to manage pain without opioids, assess for safe prescribing of opioids and risk evaluation for diversion and inappropriate use.
